Good to err on the side of caution. I am already pretty germ-phobic after being hit with MRSA ten years ago, and MSSA two years ago: two months in the hospital each time! I carry hand sanitizer everywhere I go, and will be packing antibiotics, too. This “pandemic” may turn out to be a return of the Spanish flu of 1919 – or just an example of fake news panic – but I don’t think we will know one way or the other before Gary Con. So congratulations for taking serious steps to meet the threat.

In the instance that someone is in the aforementioned high risk groups and err’s on the side of caution OR someone may have been exposed to COVID-19 is there going to be an extended refund policy put into place for tickets?

    • Melf says:

The refund policy is no refunds after December 31st, 2019. That remains in effect as it has each year. Resources have been committed to bringing the celebration from plans to concrete items such as printed materials, contracted commitments to space, food and beverage, merchandise ordered, event space set up, renting equipment, travel etc. Thank you for asking in case others were wondering and were not familiar with the policies.

I was very much hoping you would postpone this for a different weekend. You posted this on March 7th and I think it’s time to realize how different the picture is now less than a week later. Things have changed drastically in that time and the punishing nature of exponential outbreaks would tell us that they will change even more in the next week. As I spoke to my friends in Europe last night they were amidst the first days of complete shutdowns in their countries in Northern Europe and were quite upset. Most experts feel we are 7-10 days behind those countries. So with the state of Wisconsin having declared a state of emergency yesterday, the university system cancelling classes, the CDC urging large gatherings and non-mandatory travel to cease, and with the NBA, NHL, MLS, NCAA, PGA cancelling seasons, why is it that Garycon feels it is wiser than those organizations and is so invulnerable to the current crisis, so much so it is willing to risk lives?

I’m sad to hear this. As a 75-year old diabetic, I was pretty worried about it, though still planning on attending, but now I must thank you for moving to protect me and the other Legends, all of whom are about as old as I am.
I certainly plan to attend Gary Con XIII next year – or “Gary Con XII B” some time later this year, if you can set one up. I suspect Gary Con is not going to be the only gaming con cancelled by the epidemic: Gencon, Historicon and Origins will have to face the same challenges, and the epidemic is only going to get worse over the next several months. Your decision means that Gary Con will not be remembered as the place where hundreds of gamers were exposed and turned loosed to take corona virus back to their home towns. The motto could be “take Spotted Cow home with you, not Corona.” Maybe you and Grand Geneva can apply for some of the money President Trump has just announced will be available for small businesses that are hurt by the epidemic. My best wishes to you all.

    • Melf says:

There are no refunds for a badge after December 31st, 2019. The revenue was used to operate the company, pay for production of signs, printed material, licenses, services, Art, design, gift baskets, travel expenses and even hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies. These expenses are non-recoverable. We are providing virtual gaming options for all badge holders. You can participate by going to VTT.garycon.com. We are going to give a percentage discount for next year as stated, and we are also looking into the possibility of making an exception to policy for partial refunds for those who are unable to participate in virtual gaming. The coronavirus has impacted many businesses negatively. We are working to bring the best solutions possible for our attendees, vendors and sponsors while ensuring we can keep Gary Con going into the future.

Tickets for events that had a charge are already refunded. We are providing games through VTT.garycon.com as a replacement for in person gaming due to the risk of spreading coronavirus to attendees. The virtual games are no additional cost.

Please note that the cost of badges is non-refundable after December 31st because the money was invested into a variety of goods and services required to conduct the convention. Most of these are non-recoverable. We will offer a discount towards 2021 for all that have a badge for this year.

    Dear Luke,

Although, I’m am certain what a difficult, painful decision this was. However, many of the attendees are over age 60 and have health issues putting them at high risk. I was looking forward to attending, but I have many health issues, as I mentioned in my e-mail to you, so I would not have wanted to chance fate. My late husband, Duke Seifried always said he had Duke luck. Well, I don’t. I don’t buy lottery tickets for a reason! I hope to be well enough, health-wise to see you and the many other friends of Duke I met last year and who were so gracious to me.

Thank you for your great consideration of all concerned.

    Respectfully,
    Annette Baker

      Annette-
What a gracious letter. I am one of the many older (75) and at risk (diabetes) attendees you mention. I was debating the wisdom of going to Gary Con, and possibly bringing home something much worse for my wife than “a lousy T-shirt”. I deeply appreciate your support, and congratulate Luke on cancelling the con. I hope to see you again, when all this is over, at Gary Con XIII.
      May God bless you.

Nope. Its prohibitively expensive. Call and check with an insurance agent if you have any questions. If you find something under $10,000 let me know. I can raise prices by $5 a badge to cover that well enough.

      Hi John,

I’ll be hosting character generation sessions for the next four evenings for all of my GaryCon games next week, and you would be welcome to sit in and get some practice in using roll20 and Discord. Still have room in the Fallout IV and Gamma World game as well so you could join in those next week by signing up here:

      Virtual GaryCon
      https://tabletop.events/conventions/gary-con-xii-virtual-tabletop-gaming

You’ll need a PC, Tablet, or Smartphone in order to play. You will find my games listed under GameDaddy. Feel free to email me privately, send an email to [email protected] and I’ll send information on my GaryCon schedule and where you can register for my games. I’m also hosting a workshop next Wednesday night for all GMs interesting in learning how to use roll20 and discord.
