Please advise when open again.
Will there be modules for sale?
Hi Team! It’s been four days since this issue occurred. How’s it going? Child we get an update?
Please keep us posted more often. I haven’t received any updates yet.
So are we hoping to get the registration open any time soon?
Good to err on the side of caution. I am already pretty germ-phobic after being hit with MRSA ten years ago, and MSSA two years ago: two months in the hospital each time! I carry hand sanitizer everywhere I go, and will be packing antibiotics, too. This “pandemic” may turn out to be a return of the Spanish flu of 1919 – or just an example of fake news panic – but I don’t think we will know one way or the other before Gary Con. So congratulations for taking serious steps to meet the threat.
In the instance that someone is in the aforementioned high risk groups and err’s on the side of caution OR someone may have been exposed to COVID-19 is there going to be an extended refund policy put into place for tickets?
The refund policy is no refunds after December 31st, 2019. That remains in effect as it has each year. Resources have been committed to bringing the celebration from plans to concrete items such as printed materials, contracted commitments to space, food and beverage, merchandise ordered, event space set up, renting equipment, travel etc. Thank you for asking in case others were wondering and were not familiar with the policies.
With confirmed cases in Wisconsin of Covid-19 and the continued spread of the outbreak in the U.S.. I’ve seen other events and cons being cancelled. Is there a chance of this event being cancelled as well?
If someone running a game decides not to attend, will people that have signed up for the game be notified immediately or at that time?
If we are unable to get refunds, are there at least arrangements to get the merch that was part of the badge?
I was very much hoping you would postpone this for a different weekend. You posted this on March 7th and I think it’s time to realize how different the picture is now less than a week later. Things have changed drastically in that time and the punishing nature of exponential outbreaks would tell us that they will change even more in the next week. As I spoke to my friends in Europe last night they were amidst the first days of complete shutdowns in their countries in Northern Europe and were quite upset. Most experts feel we are 7-10 days behind those countries. So with the state of Wisconsin having declared a state of emergency yesterday, the university system cancelling classes, the CDC urging large gatherings and non-mandatory travel to cease, and with the NBA, NHL, MLS, NCAA, PGA cancelling seasons, why is it that Garycon feels it is wiser than those organizations and is so invulnerable to the current crisis, so much so it is willing to risk lives?
In light of the other socially responsible decisions to help halt the spread of this pandemic, has there been an update regarding this event?
Have there been vendor cancellations? And have many event host cancelled?
With the Cancellation of so many events and with many schools and businesses Telling their employees and students not to come to work or school until next month will GaryCon be closing/canceling?
There is officially a state of emergency. Will the con continue or is it going ot be canceled or postponed? I need to know to see if I can refund my hotel and cnacle my vacation time at work.
Yes!
When will 2021 badges be available?
We typically open up Badge Purchases in July or August. We will announce it far and wide. Thank you for your support!
Thank you for putting safety first. This is a horrible situation and out of your control. I will really miss the con but I fully understand and praise your strength in making this hard call. I look forward to Gary Con next year.
Thank you David. This was a difficult decision and we are working through the best way ahead under trying circumstances.
Hello, This was to be our first time at GaryCon. I am sad it is cancelled. We will be there next year!! Please let everyone know what we can do to help your family out.
Paula, Merri Ann and Dexter
Thanks Paula. We are looking forward to seeing you at Gary Con XIII. If you can play games using out Virtual Gary Con site please do. Celebrate with your family and make some new friends online. We will have GC XII merchandise on sale next week. Please visit our website and shop the bazaar. Please know we will do our best to reduce the price of badges for 2021 for all that paid for one this year.
I’m sad to hear this. As a 75-year old diabetic, I was pretty worried about it, though still planning on attending, but now I must thank you for moving to protect me and the other Legends, all of whom are about as old as I am.
I certainly plan to attend Gary Con XIII next year – or “Gary Con XII B” some time later this year, if you can set one up. I suspect Gary Con is not going to be the only gaming con cancelled by the epidemic: Gencon, Historicon and Origins will have to face the same challenges, and the epidemic is only going to get worse over the next several months. Your decision means that Gary Con will not be remembered as the place where hundreds of gamers were exposed and turned loosed to take corona virus back to their home towns. The motto could be “take Spotted Cow home with you, not Corona.” Maybe you and Grand Geneva can apply for some of the money President Trump has just announced will be available for small businesses that are hurt by the epidemic. My best wishes to you all.

Hi David. It was a tough call but you are right. None of us wanted to be responsible for causing the spread of this disease across multiple states. Who knows how many lives would be impacted and even some ended. After weighing the potential outcomes the decision was clear.
Virtual Con? Wouldn’t be too hard to setup, made one for my work once because we’re international.
Yes we had a virtual component that is now the main focus. VTT.garycon.com. We are over 600 events now!
Am I understanding this post correctly; that the ~$200 that my wife and I spent on our silver badges is just gone? That we MIGHT get a discount for next year and that’s IF we can even attend next year?
There are no refunds for a badge after December 31st, 2019. The revenue was used to operate the company, pay for production of signs, printed material, licenses, services, Art, design, gift baskets, travel expenses and even hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies. These expenses are non-recoverable. We are providing virtual gaming options for all badge holders. You can participate by going to VTT.garycon.com. We are going to give a percentage discount for next year as stated, and we are also looking into the possibility of making an exception to policy for partial refunds for those who are unable to participate in virtual gaming. The coronavirus has impacted many businesses negatively. We are working to bring the best solutions possible for our attendees, vendors and sponsors while ensuring we can keep Gary Con going into the future.
Tough decision but had to be made. Disappointment aside, its better to have everyone healthy and back in 2021 more eager than ever. I know I’ll be there.
Thank you for your support. It means a lot to the staff to hear people express this sentiment.
Am I correct in assuming tickets will not be refunded hence the discount next year?
Tickets for events that had a charge are already refunded. We are providing games through VTT.garycon.com as a replacement for in person gaming due to the risk of spreading coronavirus to attendees. The virtual games are no additional cost.
Please note that the cost of badges is non-refundable after December 31st because the money was invested into a variety of goods and services required to conduct the convention. Most of these are non-recoverable. We will offer a discount towards 2021 for all that have a badge for this year.
You made your saving throw and you will survive and flourish again! I love this Con!😱🤧😷🤔🤗🌞
[…] a long post, Luke Gygax explains why he and the organisers had come to this […]
Dear Luke,
Although, I’m am certain what a difficult, painful decision this was. However, many of the attendees are over age 60 and have health issues putting them at high risk. I was looking forward to attending, but I have many health issues, as I mentioned in my e-mail to you, so I would not have wanted to chance fate. My late husband, Duke Seifried always said he had Duke luck. Well, I don’t. I don’t buy lottery tickets for a reason! I hope to be well enough, health-wise to see you and the many other friends of Duke I met last year and who were so gracious to me.
Thank you for your great consideration of all concerned.
Respectfully,
Annette Baker
Annette-
What a gracious letter. I am one of the many older (75) and at risk (diabetes) attendees you mention. I was debating the wisdom of going to Gary Con, and possibly bringing home something much worse for my wife than “a lousy T-shirt”. I deeply appreciate your support, and congratulate Luke on cancelling the con. I hope to see you again, when all this is over, at Gary Con XIII.
May God bless you.
-David Wesely
We will be happy to see you in Lake Geneva next year!
Are you sending out anything for silver badge level or is VTT.garycon.com and some unknown discount on next year all we get. I would be real hesitant to buy tickets in advance again, knowing no refund or anything can result. I bought 2 badges and will not likely do VTT.garycon.com.
Brent if you can’t participate in VGC then fill out the refund request form and we will take care of you to the best of our ability
I was a GM for GaryCon (GM credit from GC11) and I would like that carried over to Gary Con 13. Could you also give some credit, if possible, for my son’s badge, Noah Fuller, to GaryCon 13? Neither of us will be doing virtual GaryCon.
Hi Brett. GM credits will carry over to next year. Thank you very much for running games. And yes the plan is to offer VGC and a credit towards next year for all with a valid badge after GC XII. Thanks for working with us. The coronavirus is creating havoc for everyone and we just want to get through to hold lucky GC XIII
Wouldn’t you have insurance for this exact type of situation? Any number of things could force a convention to close out, if you didn’t have insurance this time you should look at getting it in future.
I wish I could do virtual garycon, but my schedule changed after it was canceled.
Not sure of any insurance coverage that would cover a government regulated social distancing.
Most event insurance doesn’t cover disease outbreaks. I’m not sure any does. Weather, natural disasters, and terrorism, yes, but not this for some reason.
Nope. Its prohibitively expensive. Call and check with an insurance agent if you have any questions. If you find something under $10,000 let me know. I can raise prices by $5 a badge to cover that well enough.
Well I couldnt make it in person to GC never have been I live in the rio grande valley. Can I purchase a badge to this? And what VTT are you going to use? Ive never used roll 20 or fantasy grounds.
Hi John,
I’ll be hosting character generation sessions for the next four evenings for all of my GaryCon games next week, and you would be welcome to sit in and get some practice in using roll20 and Discord. Still have room in the Fallout IV and Gamma World game as well so you could join in those next week by signing up here:
Virtual GaryCon
https://tabletop.events/conventions/gary-con-xii-virtual-tabletop-gaming
You’ll need a PC, Tablet, or Smartphone in order to play. You will find my games listed under GameDaddy. Feel free to email me privately, send an email to [email protected] and I’ll send information on my GaryCon schedule and where you can register for my games. I’m also hosting a workshop next Wednesday night for all GMs interesting in learning how to use roll20 and discord.
Sincerely,
Dirk Collins “GameDaddy”
Neither me nor my friends have been able to get the refund request link to work -. Any ideas or updates?
I think I see the problem. The TTE system dropped the “:” behind https. But the news post above works perfectly. Here is the link again.

That worked, thank you!
You are welcome. Sorry you aren’t joining us for GC XII
I’ve heard of virtual swag for VGC, but I have yet to see any directions of how to obtain it…
That will be communicated to everyone. I think the plan is to collect all the links and/or coupons into a dropbox and share it with all of the badge holders. So far we are at $225+ of retail value for all.
Excellent. Thanks!
Now that the pre-sale period has ended officially for GaryCon 2021 (Oct 3), when will the remaining tickets be released for general sales?
Tickets are open and on sale now!
This is for sure the right thing to do, looking fro to Ethereal GC and hopefully Material GC in 2022!
I know this if offf topic but I’m lookingg
into starting my own blog and was curious what all is needed to get setup?
I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very web ssmart soo I’m not 100%
sure. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
